“England expects…”
On October 21, 2006 the 201th Anniversary of Britain's greatest naval victory, the British Business Club in Moscow held its Trafalgar Ball in the Marriott Grand Hotel. Representatives of the British expatriate community as well as many Muscovites came in their best bib and tucker. Everybody had enormous fun, and it was all in a good cause - supporting the Taganka Children’s Fund. Raffle tickets for the fine prizes donated by the sponsors were generously bought by the guests.
Mr Anthony Brenton, Her Majesty's Ambassador to Moscow, was the guest of honour. Mr Brenton gave a few words: “I am delighted to contribute a word for this year’s Trafalgar Ball. The Ball is a high point in the British Business Club’s programme of involvement and support for British business in Moscow, and of course a high point too in their generous programme of support for the Trafalgar Children’s Fund, which now goes back seven years. I am immensely grateful to them. And while their success may not look as dramatic as that of Lord Nelson two hundred years ago, it speaks as eloquently in its own way of the good things our country and its people can do."

The Battle of Trafalgar was fought on 21 October 1805, during the War of the Third Coalition assembled by Britain against France. It was the most significant naval battle of the Napoleonic Wars, and the pivotal naval battle of the 19th century. As the two fleets moved towards engagement, Admiral Nelson ran up a thirty-one flag signal to the rest of the fleet, spelling out the famous phrase "England expects that every man will do his duty." Nelson himself was wounded, and died on the deck of the Victory.
