The Charities Donations Office of the International Women's Club of Moscow receives many donations of various items. These are sorted by volunteers at the office and then redistributed to IWC Charities' projects with baby houses, orphanages, foster families, the elderly, street children, soup kitchens, prisons and holding centers, the handicapped and hospitals, and other charity organizations and individuals in need.  Hope Charity Auction
A highly successful auction of contemporary Russian art was organised by the Irish Embassy on 16 February. In aid of Operation Hope, a charity to support treatment of Russian children suffering from hydrocephalus, the auction proved a sell-out event raising almost US$50,000. It shouldn’t take a personal life crisis to force women to deal with their financial standing, but quite often a crisis is the catalyst for women to start saving. Money management means different things to individuals — paying off debts, starting a savings plan, or investing in stock and shares. Managing and growing assets are very important for a woman for various reasons. Reasons vary from education fees, responsibilities to children and parents, divorce, retirement or death. Most of us spend around fifteen years of our lives being educated to form a living, a family and a career, but we don’t know how to manage the money we bring home, nor the plans that may be available to us. We must recognize and believe that strengthening our personal finances will open doors for ourselves and our extensions (lifestyle, partner, children, and parents).
Throughout the generations, it has been very common for the man of the household to manage the family wealth. This would include all financial transactions, such as banking, payment of utility bills, etc. It was also very common that the man of the house would also be the decision maker when it came to making investments, i.e. whether to buy some bonds or when to change the terms of fixed deposits. It is very common nowadays to still find many investment portfolios still in the sole name of the husband, without his spouse even knowing it existed.
The situation is thankfully gradually changing and women in a relationship/marriage are becoming more financially independent. This is also reflected in the decision making process where I would argue that when a couple is left with the decision of how to invest a sum of money, the woman now tends to be the eventual decision maker. This is very positive and shows that younger women today are eager to reverse the situation seen with their parents and grandparents before them.
What is clear is that the older generation is still dominated by men making financial decisions and not involving the woman enough. This will hopefully become less and less, as more women take control, and are encouraged by their husbands to understand the position of their family’s wealth. We quite rightly live in a time of equality and this should include the finances of the family unit. If you are not aware of the banking and investment arrangements of your family then the sooner you get to grasp with it the better. Invalidity or death of the partner that holds the purse strings can make it very difficult for the other partner to take over where one party has dominated for years. If you don’t know where to begin then ask a financial adviser. Their role is to get you on the right track to managing your finances and to help you set plans and goals to meet your and your family’s financial obligations. |

An hour after I had tapped out the last letters of my previous missive, I walked out of our office on the Garden ring to head home in my bedny machina. I had just described how I had been unafraid for my Zhiguli’s fate when I left it on the Garden Ring near Paveletskaya metro station for four days during a trip to the south. Tonight, when I reached the curb, it was gone, replaced by a red Volkswagen. Not for a minute did I think it was stolen. While my Russian co-worker Barney headed for the gaishnik on the corner, I quizzed the security guard who stands like a totem pole in front of the nearby Azbuka Vkusa grocery. “They took a few cars away about 40 minutes ago,” I was told.
Barney returned with the phone number of the local police station and the stoyanka that was now the destination of my poor Zhiguli on a contract evakuator. “It should arrive there in about an hour,” we were told on the mobile phone. “We’re open 24 hours, stop by any time.”
The next day, I learned that the police had started a pre-winter towing campaign on the Garden Ring. Of course, cars line up behind the tow trucks to take the soonto- be-empty parking spaces. After all, it will take 3 hours before they could possibly return. During the following two weeks, I watched out the window seats at Doug and Marty’s, and saw how the evacuators lift cars off the street three or four at a time. This was always followed by the scene, as shoppers from the Atrium across the street returned to find their Merc or BMW missing.
I apparently had a 24-hour grace period before storage charges of 40 rubles per hour began to mount up. However, it was not until the end of the next day that I was able to show up at the police office where I was written up for a 200 ruble fine and given papers that would let me pick up the car. I had 30 days to pay the fine. The next day, Barney drove me out to the stoyanka near MKAD. Already at 36 hours, I expected to be held up for some serious money, to have to return to Moscow due to some paperwork error, or at least pay 400 rubles. Imagine my surprise when, after removing the green fluorescent tape that sealed all the doors, trunk, and hood, the cashier said there would be no charge.
Any attempt to “follow the money” on this adventure appeared to be fruitless. I was out-of-pocket just 200 rubles, and I am not even sure what would have happened had I not paid that. The parking space I had been towed out of was probably filled within 60 seconds of evacuation.
My prophetic keyboard was less charitable to Oleg Shcherbinsky. My column had also described how the great and powerful in Russia, who make their own road rules, could crush a Zhiguli like a tin can, and the Zhiguli driver would pay. As Shcherbinsky was about to take a left turn on a country road, the great and powerful appeared like a comet from behind, reportedly at 200 kilometers per hour, and headed off the road for their very predictable and certain death at that speed. Shcherbinsky has now been sent to a Siberian camp for four years; the accident was, of course, his fault. At least he survived. |
