Keep The Camp Fires Burning
Every parent knows that the summer holidays are much too long, not for the kids, but for their sanity. But you don’t have to go on holiday with them, you can send them to a holiday camp. Here are some that we checked out (to find out if they have qualified employees, do they speak English etc). Even ifthey don’t speak English, or your own language, it’s a great way for the kids to be on their own, do their own thing, and improve their Russian.

It was the dream of every Soviet child to come to Artek; it’s not just a summer camp but a world in itself, with beautiful nature all around, the Crimean mountains, and clean beaches. Nowadays the children are not only from the Kremlin, and foreigners are welcome. There are 10 camps with various types of accommodation: 5-storey blocks, 2-storey houses, dachas dating from the beginning of the 20th century. An open, heated swimming pool with sea water and, of course, the Black Sea. A festival of cinema and art, sports tournaments, numerous hobby groups, a school, a space exhibition, a children’s TV studio, computer and libraries.

A summer programme for children which aims to educate as much as provide entertainment. The programme is titled ‘Three Stages of Cognition’ and is held together with Artek International Children’s Centre, the Association of American Children’s Camps and Children of Russia Foundation. For children from 7 to 16 years old, there are more than 30 types of intellectual, sport and creative activities. English-speaking group leaders. After completing each stage a certificate is issued. Upon completing all stages, a Diploma of Survival School is granted which allows the recipient to act as a travel leader. Swimming and diving lessons, various sports facilities, hobby groups, press-centre and newspapers, dance and theatre studios, etc. Accommodation for 4 to 5 people, in 2-storey brick houses, 8 rooms on each floor. 5 meals per day. From July 18 to August 7 and from August 9 to August 29.

4.5 hectares of grounds with an old park, 10 buildings for living and studying, sports complex, swimming pool. Here leisure is combined with various forms of studies (3-4 hours a day) which include lessons in Russian and English, and one or two courses of choice. Leisure is about sport, excursions, horse riding, driving lessons and more. Meals 4 times per day, and a doctor is always there. Accommodation in one-storey brick houses with all facilities, for 20 people, 2 or 3 people in one room, depending on age. For children from 6 to 16 years old. July 3 to 16; July 17 to 30; July 30 to August 13.

The 21-day programme is held at the Smena camp on the shores of the Black Sea, 12 kms away from Anapa, in the picturesque Sukko valley. Up to 120 children. Cottages with rooms for 4 people, 5 meals per day, mini-aquapark, swimming pools with sea water, sports grounds and health recreation facilities.
