Animal Rights Rally
Photos Passport

On Thursday, June 26 on Pushkin Square, a group of animal rights activists and their supporters held a rally to draw attention to the city’s stray animal problem. While accurate statistics on the number of animals living on the city’s streets are hard to come by, it seems that the problem has worsened in recent years. Speakers at the gathering included staff of the VITA Center for Animal Rights as well as such celebrities as Andrei Makarevich of the rock band Mashina Vremeni, Alexander Martynov of the group Szenacardia, singer and composer Yuri Antonov, and singer Yelena Kamburova. Themes touched upon by those who spoke included pleas for spaying and neutering as a humane approach to animal population control as well as the importance of sensible and sensitive policies toward animals.
